The Los Angeles Clippers, in their second to last preseason game, pulled out a 109-103 victory of the Denver Nuggets.
“You can see both teams wanted to play well,” Doc Rivers said after the game. “They kind of knew they weren’t going to play that many minutes. So, I liked that.”
Here are a few takeaways from the Clippers’ win.
Boban Marjanovic lights up the Nuggets
Boban Marjanovic joined the Clippers in the deal that sent Blake Griffin to the Detroit Pistons. Entering his first full season in Los Angeles, there are rather large expectations placed on the 7’ 3” Serbian center.
In the Clippers final preseason game, Marjanovic put on a show on both the offensive defensive side of the ball.
During the 15 minutes he played, the 30-year-old scored 14 points on 5-8 shooting from the field. Marjanovic completed his double-double by bringing in 12 rebounds, with five of them coming on the offensive glass. His efforts helped overcome what was at one time a 19-point deficit.
The Serbian, if given more minutes this season, will be a wild card for the Clippers, and teams will certainly have to pay close attention.
New guys stepping up
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the 11th pick of the 2018 NBA Draft, is still learning how to adjust to the NBA style of play. In the three games the rookie has played this preseason, he has averaged 22.5 minutes, while scoring a hair under 10 points per game.
He has praised how much he has already learned from Doc Rivers saying, “That is what I expected. What I worked for. So for me, it’s bound to happen.”
Another new Clipper, Mike Scott, who has only been with his new team since July 9th, is coming along nicely. Despite not getting his scoring touch going quite yet – he’s only scored nine points in four games – Scott brings veteran leadership to the team.
The former Atlanta Hawk has been around the block a time or two in his lengthy career. He’s been through every imaginable high and low and can guide the crop of youngsters forward. Scott capped off his performance against the Nuggets with a pass to himself before finishing the move off at the rack.
These same two teams will meet to start the season on October 17th at the Staples Center. Tip off for this game is set for 7:30 PM.
