With the rain pouring down on the Talen Energy Stadium, the LA Galaxy pored on three goals in the second half to win 3-1 over the Philadelphia Union.
This victory for the Galaxy pushes their unbeaten streak to seven in a row. LA now sit in fourth, their highest place in the standings since April, in the Western Conference on 31 points.
“We’ve got to continue to build on our good run,” Schmid said after the match. “We have to continue to believe in ourselves.
“Today was the first time that we’ve had everyone on the field at one point.”
Union Come out Firing
From 22 yards away in the 12th minute, GDS attempted a lofty shot. Despite the ball going into Andre Blake’s arms, it was a good idea to test the goalkeeper in the rain.
Three minutes later, the Union nearly found the opening goal of the second ball. Bořek Dočkal headed the delivery towards CJ Sapong. David Bingham came off his line well to stop the Union striker.
In the 17th minute, Gio received the ball at the top of the 18-yard box from Ola Kamara. The Mexican international faked with his right foot before shooting with his left. The attempt, though, was pushed away by Blake.
Philadelphia finally managed to go ahead in the 29th minute after dominating the first portion of the match. Dočkal’s initial shot looked like it was going wide of goal, but Sapong redirected it back on frame. The Galaxy goalkeeper stopped the ball at first, however, it still trickled into the net.
Galaxy Score Three in Second Half to Complete Comeback
Romain Alessandrini was introduced before the second half kickoff. This role for the French winger is new, but he is making the most of his opportunities. Alessandrini uses the opportunity as a chance to run at a tiring opposition back line and take more chances.
“Romain is not a sub, he’s a starter on this team and this is one of the few times we have had all our guys on the pitch. I consider Romain a starter,” Schmid said.
It did not take long after the halftime interval for the Galaxy to find the game tying goal. Ibrahimovic threaded a pass, after receiving a sublime ball from Jonathan Dos Santos, into the stride of Kamara. Even with Blake rushing out of his area, the Norwegian striker was able to lob his effort up and over.
The Galaxy took the lead two minutes after the hour mark. Alessandrini glided down the left flank and found Zlatan Ibrahimovic wide open 16 yards from goal. Then, the Swedish striker took the pass first time and slammed his right footed effort into the bottom corner.
Alessandrini provided a pinpoint accurate cross off a corner eight minutes from the end of the match. Michael Ciani rose up at the six-yard-box and smashed a header past a helpless Blake to round off a great second half.
Round two of El Trafico begins on Thursday at the Banc of California Stadium. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
