While the LA Galaxy did not win a third straight match, they managed to draw 1-1 with Sporting Kansas City.
However, this will certainly feel like a loss for Dom Kinnear and company, having squandered a lead in the 83rd minute. Those dropped points were vital. Had the Galaxy been able to secure all three points, they would have leap-frogged Real Salt Lake, who lost 4-1 to the Portland Timbers, to the sixth spot.
Only Rolf Feltscher, who was suspended due to yellow card accumulation, was replaced in the starting lineup. Sheanon Williams.
Romain Alessandrini started things off in the seventh minute with an audacious attempt from long range. His shot, from around 40 yards, soared over the top of the Sporting goal and landed in the stands.
Ibrahimovic Opens up the Scoring
The Frenchman was involved in the build up once more 22 minutes into proceedings. He sent a dangerous low cross towards Ola Kamara in the box. Kamara went to try to one-time the delivery when Tim Melia came off his line late and brought down the Norwegian striker.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic stepped up from 12 yards away and sent Melia the wrong way for his 21st goal of the season.
Right before the halftime interval, Ashley Cole had an opportunity to put another goal on the board for the Galaxy. He raced in behind the Kansas City defense and attempted to lob the goalkeeper Tim Melia. The SKC goalie, however, did well to react and punch the shot over for a corner kick.
Off the ensuing set piece, Daniel Steres found the back of the net after Melia left a big rebound out in the danger zone. After a video review, it was deemed that Steres was in an offside position. The margins were minimal, though, and the goal could have stood if there was a different referee in charge.
“I didn’t see the VAR. I won’t speak about that,” Kinnear told media after.
SKC Equalize Late
Those missed chances at the end of the first half would come back to haunt the Galaxy because in the 83rd minute, Sporting equalized.
David Bingham, who had been superb all night long, could do nothing to keep out Johnny Russell’s dagger. The defense did not step up to apply any pressure and that allowed Russell to weave his way through and beat Bingham.
“We have to win [the final two games]. That’s the bottom line,” Bingham said.
“We have to go in to Minnesota and we have to come out with three points. That’s the only thing we’re going to be looking forward to this next week and a half.”
There are only two games remaining in the MLS regular season. Their next opponent, two weeks time, is Minnesota United FC.
Is Zlatan Ibrahimovic going to play in this match? The question is still up for debate. MNUFC play on AstroTurf, and with Ibrahimovic still recovering from a knee surgery, there is a chance he could not play.
If he does not play, others are going to have to step up into the fray. This match is scheduled for 2:00 PM PST.
