This is the sort of game that is going to give Sigi Schmid nightmares for a number of reasons. Yes, the LA Galaxy came away with a 2-2 draw against the Colorado Rapids, but injuries and a leaky defense are causes for concern.
The Galaxy had the lead twice during this match, but blew both leads eight minutes apart from each other.
Schmid needed to make two changes to his starting 11 because of injuries to Romain Alessandrini and Giovani dos Santos. “I think Gio is [out] two to four weeks and I think Romain is a week to two weeks,” the head coach said after the match.
Sebastian Lletget moved into GDS’ spot while Chris Pontius returned to the lineup.
Injuries Pile Up for the Galaxy
The 65-year-old’s first nightmare came at the half hour mark. Jonathan Dos Santos went down holding onto his right groin. The trainer’s came out immediately, signaling the end and had to be replaced by Servando Carrasco.
Kamara, in the 33rd minute of play, held up the ball on the edge of the area after Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed a long ball forward. He took a couple of touches before firing an attempt at goal inches wide.
Then, the Norwegian striker came close once more two minutes later. The striker lept above the Rapids defense and headed a dangerous cross downwards. Tim Howard was able to make a quick reaction save and keep the ball from sneaking in at the near post.
Schmid’s second nightmare occurred during the halftime interval. Michael Ciani, who held the back of his leg at the end of the half, was unable to continue and was replaced by Dave Romney.
The Galaxy’s captain, Ashley Cole, showcased his offensive ability right before the hour mark. He received a pass just inside the box, turned the ball around a Colorado defender and got his shot past Howard.
Five minutes after the hour mark, Ibrahimovic started a move that should have resulted in a better opportunity. He lifted a cross towards Carrasco at the far post. The midfielder did get his head on the delivery, but it was weak and hit straight the former USMNT goalkeeper.
Both Sides Score Twice in Second Half
The third nightmare came through the familiar foe in Edgar Castillo, who tormented the Galaxy during last meeting, leveled proceedings in the 74th minute. LA were unable to clear a ball over the top of the defense. The second ball fell into space and Dave Romney close off the angle quick enough. Because of that, it allowed the New Mexico native to hit a zipping shot past David Bingham.
Four minutes later, Lletget notched his second goal in as many matches. A ball over the top bounced around before it fell into space for the 25-year-old. He opened his body up and hit a left-footed shot first time past Howard.
Schmid’s final nightmare came with eight minutes remaining. Niki Jackson, the Rapid’s rookie, ran past a couple of defenders before ripping a shot on goal. Steres went down to block it, but it took a wicked deflection into the back of the net. The Galaxy goalkeeper, Bingham, had the near post covered, but the ball still got behind him.
The Galaxy had the opportunity to move into a tie for second with Sporting KC had they won all three points on Tuesday. But because they only got one point, LA remains in the fourth spot.
As we head into the stretch run, the defense is going to need to tighten up even more. Depth is going to be an issue as well. If one more member goes down injured, the depth will surely be tested.
